COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Preserving tradition

Our program seeks to utilise workshops as a means of transferring knowledge close to disappearing from the community, to future generations to uphold and revalue.

Preserving the woodworking traditions.

Location: Zimatlàn de Álvarez, Oaxaca. Mexico.

Main objective:
Preserving the woodworking traditions through hands-on teaching-learning processes for young people from the community interested in the trade.

Resume:
Zimatlán de Álvarez is a community located 45 minutes from the Capital of Oaxaca. As a result of the mixture between cultures, customs, and expressions that are part of our history and tradition, we host a carpentry workshop with "Mtro. Doroteo." As the sole preserver of traditional woodworking techniques in the community, Mtro. Doroteo continues working with this beautiful trade.

Hand in hand with "Mtro. Doroteo", we continue developing a series of utilitarian pieces in wood, and motivating future generations to continue with the tradition of this trade. Together we see the importance of these workshops, aimed mainly at young people from the community, but which also extend to artists, designers, and the general public interested in the trade. Through them, we transfer and preserve knowledge with future creative generations.

Preserving the tradition of palm weaving.

Location: San Andrés Zabache, Oaxaca. Mexico.

Main objective:
Preserve the craft of palm weaving through teaching practical learning processes for young people from the community interested in the craft.

Resume:
Palm weaving has been done in Mexico since our pre-Columbian times. This tradition encompasses the making of various pieces for everyday use, such as the mat: an artifact that holds deep symbolism for our cultures.

Creating a piece through palm weaving is to intertwine our history with the natural fibers, to preserve the legacy of our ancestors.

Seeing the importance that this fabric represents in the community of San Andrés Zabache, hand in hand with "Mtra. Rosario", we motivate future generations to continue with this trade. We see the importance of providing workshops aimed mainly at young people from the community, but which also extend to artists, designers, and the general public. Through this, we transfer and preserve knowledge with future creative generations.

Creativity and design

Our Creativity and Design program offers various workshops that stimulate creativity and promote design as a means of finding solutions for various problems within and outside of the community. These workshops are carried out in collaboration with academics, artists, designers, and various organizations, and are aimed at children, youth, and adults. Each workshop is developed with specific objectives and takes place in the "Hacer Común" community center, which provides opportunities to explore and expand the ideas of the community.

Integral Health

To "Hacer Común" human development in the community is one of the most important objectives. This is why, through various courses and workshops, we provide the tools for each individual to find a balance between their physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social self, and this allows adequate growth and development for all areas of life. Each workshop is developed with specific objectives and is carried out in collaboration with teachers specialized in the subject.
